Sustainable development of the tysia{ogonek}clecie estate in katowice. purpose or accident?

The article presents the urban analysis of co-operative housing estate im. Tysia{ogonek}clecia in Katowice (Poland) in view of the principles of sustainable development, based on triad: economy-ecology-society. The main settlement was established in 1962-1982, so was completed before the announcement of the definition of sustainable development in the Report of the World Commission of Environment and Development in 1987. Further investments in the estate already arisen in the XXI-st century and its resources currently are 35 residential buildings, and the estate's area is 188 ha. The paper shows the experience of sustainable development for the present settlement, focused on such issues as: {black small square} the location of settlement in the vicinity of the Silesian Park, as the idea of urban composition of estate, {black small square} foundation settlement in the areas of mining damage, causing a number of structural barriers in the housing space, {black small square} analysis highlighted barriers and ways to modernize, {black small square} new housing investments, disrupting biological rhythm of housing estate, {black small square} new investments in infrastructure and communication. Studies seek to demonstrate the benefits and consequences resulting from conducted projects, their interactions with each other and to the rhythm of social life throughout the neighborhood. All analyzes were carried out by the author in the Polish-German research project N° UE7/RAr-3/2011 entitled: Yesterday, today and tomorrow of Polish and German large housing estates. A comparative study of urban development models and their acceptance as an example of Katowice and Leipzig, co-financed by the Polish-German Foundation for Science.
