Introduction: Data pertaining the influence of type 1 diabetes (DM1) on bone status of children’s and young adults’ bones are ambiguous. In 2007 in the Silesian region a research of bone status amongst children and adolescents with DM1 revealed no differences in bone quality in comparison to a control group of healthy pre-pubertal children and signifi-cantly worse bone quality in DM1 patients compared to healthy adolescents. Aim: The assessment of bone status in adolescents and young adults with DM1 and their comparison to the results of the patients obtained 10 years earlier. Material and methods: 32 patients (12 women, 20 men), aged 14–27 (20.5 ± 3.93) years, with DM1 duration 13.9 ± 1.97 years took part in the study. Bone status was assessed by Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS; measurement of Ad-SoS – amplitude dependent speed of sound [m/s]). Following parameters were analyzed:sex, age, DM1 duration, anthropometric parameters presented as standard deviation scores (SDS), daily insulin requirement (DIR), mean glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) from the year preced-ing the research, medication other than insulin, bone fractures and comorbidities. Results: There were no significant differences between the current results of patients’ QUS measurements and the results from before 10 years, including analysis in subgroups (according to history of fractures, comorbidities or additional medication). The past QUS measurements correlated positively with current results obtained on left and right hands (respectively r = 0.64 and r = 0.65, for both p < 0.001). There were significant differences between current and previous measurements on the left hand between females and males (0.71 ± 1.11 vs-0.30 ± 1.12; p = 0.018) and between patients with positive and negative history of fractures (0.37 ± 1.11 vs-0.55 ± 1.21; p = 0.042). Mean HbA1c from the last year, DIR and anthropometric measurements were not related to bone status. Conclusions: In the studied group bone status did not change in comparison to that from before 10 years and analysis revealed their association with the past values. Bone status was not related to long-term glycemic control or daily insulin requirement. Source of funding: The research was partially financed by BK/204/RAU1/2017.
