N2 - The noise generated by a gear housing is the function of frequency and vibration distribution upon the radiating surface. The reduction of noise level generated by gears has been attained by changing the housing rigidity and minimising excitations in the meshing zone. The examinations indicate that proper ribbing of the housing lowers the level of the generated noise more effectively than doubling the thickness of the housing walls. The methods of structural modification of the design based on FEM enable evaluating the effect of different design changes upon the vibro-Acoustic activity of the housings, even where simplified procedures are used. The numerical simulations have been confirmed by comparison with experimental results.
