Abstract
The paper presents an assessment of the removal degree of selected contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) present in various water matrices subjected to advanced oxidation processes based on the action of natural sunlight radiation. The test were conducted on tap water, surface water, rainwater and an effluent form a communal wastewater treatment plant spiked with micropollutants: diclofenac, caffeine and carbamazepine - pharmaceutical compounds; oxadiazon, triclosan, trialat - pesticides; bisphenol A, 4-octylophenol - industrial additives, and mestranol and progesterone - hormones. The water solution were exposed to O2, O3, H2O2, O2/O3, O2/H2O2, O3/H2O2, O2/O3/H2O2 and supported by sunlight. The decomposition of compounds was evaluated based on their removal degrees estimated by the use of the chromatographic analysis. It was observed that the physico-chemical composition of the water matrix had a significant impact on the decomposition of the tested compounds. The occurrence of high molecular weight organic matter had a positive influence on the removal of pharmaceutical compounds. The highest CECs removal degrees were noted during the implementation of processes assisted by O3. However none of the performed configuration of advanced oxidation processes allowed for a complete decomposition of CECs in the time frame of the experiment.
