Abstract
Damage to historic buildings is most often caused by technical wear and tear, ageing of materials, as well as functional and environmental wear and tear. In the worst condition are postindustrial historic buildings, which are currently not fulfilling their function. In order to maintain such a facility, it is often necessary to make a thorough modernization and adaptation to other usable functions. The article presents an analysis of the historic construction of the former gas tank located inn Warsaw, on the basis of which its weakest elements were determined, as well as the load capacity of other important components was checked. The weakest elements of the structure were assessed and the strengths of individual fragments of the masonry, steel and wooden structure were checked. On this basis, the method of adaptation of the object to other usable functions was determined.
