Abstract

The paper presents the results of studies on the treatment of natural waters having high contents of organic compounds. The research involved the unit processes coagulation, ultrafiltration, and the hybrid process coagulation-sedimentation+ultrafiltration and in-line coagulation ultrafiltration. In the membrane filtration process we applied the 0.03μm PVDF immersed hollow - fiber membranes. The volumetric permeate flux was constant (5.7×10 -05 m 3/m 2s). Simulated water containing humic acids in amount of 20 and 30 mg/l. was used in the investigations. Four coagulants were tested for which optimal process parameters were determined experimentally. We tested the effectiveness of coagulation and ultrafiltration and that of the hybrid system coagulation-membrane filtration, based on measurements of membrane yield (permeate flux) and physicochemical analysis of raw water and permeates. The application of the hybrid system combining coagulation and ultrafiltration offers better removal of organic pollution (100% for TOC).
