Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of time on the interlayer bonding between asphalt layers reinforced with a geocomposite asphalt interlayer. Laboratory and field studies were performed using double-layer asphalt specimens with and without a geocomposite. Interlayer bonding was evaluated by direct shear tests for laboratory-prepared specimens conducted immediately after construction and after 3 years of conditioning. Moreover, direct shear tests have also been conducted for specimens cored from the road pavement 2 months after construction. Results show that the interlayer shear strength and stiffness increased significantly over time, especially in the geocomposite-reinforced systems. In these systems, the interlayer shear strength increased by more than threefold from the initial values. The findings demonstrate that curing, binder aging, and traffic-induced congestion contribute to stronger interlayer bonds over time.
