Abstract

Hidden corrosion in aircraft structures is one of the most dangerous types of corrosion, since it remains undetectable until developing to high levels of severity. One of the most effective non-destructive testing techniques used for detection of this type of corrosion is the optical D-Sight technique widely used in ground maintenance for both civilian and military aviation. In the last years, the authors have made a progress towards quantification of the hidden corrosion spots, which makes it possible to make the D-Sight technique the quantitative one. To validate the developed enhancement procedures for the D-Sight technique, the effective method of introducing deformations in sheets similar to those appearing during hidden corrosion in aircraft structures needs to be developed. In this paper, the authors presented systematic studies on the simulation of hidden corrosion, including the selection of the material, the character of mechanical treatment, and further image processing and visualization approaches necessary for quantification of this type of structural damage.
