Abstract
Water and wastewater pollution has become a major environmental concern, necessitating effective and sustainable remediation techniques. In recent years, biological remediation and phytoremediation have gained significant attention as promising approaches for the treatment of water and wastewater contaminated with various pollutants. This chapter comprehensively evaluates different treatment techniques employed in biological remediation and phytoremediation processes to address water and wastewater pollution. It presents an overview of the various biological treatment techniques, including microbial degradation, biofiltration, and bioremediation. The mechanisms involved in each technique are discussed, along with their applications and limitations in wastewater treatment. Furthermore, the potential of phytoremediation, which utilizes plants and their associated microorganisms to remove pollutants from water and wastewater, is discussed. Different phytoremediation approaches, such as rhizofiltration, phytodegradation, and phytostabilization, are elucidated in detail. Furthermore, recent advancements in biotechnological tools and techniques that enhance the efficiency and applicability of biological remediation and phytoremediation processes are presented. Finally, a critical assessment of the challenges and future prospects associated with biological remediation and phytoremediation techniques is given. Overall, this comprehensive study provides valuable insights into the utilization of biological remediation and phytoremediation for the treatment of water and wastewater.
