Abstract
The removal of pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phthalates by membrane processes were investigated. The two nanofiltration membranes: NF-SF10 and NF-DS5DK were examined. Membranes were filtrating water containing mixtures of PAHs and phthalates standards which total concentration ranged: 55 - 2300 ng dm-3 (PAHs) and 120 - 1400 μg dm-3 (phthalates). These applied concentration levels represented waters of a weak, medium and strong contamination with analyzed group of pollutants. The presence of xenobiotics in filtrated waters were controlled by chromatographic methods. Both types of the nanofiltration membranes were efficiently removing PAHs as well as phthalates from the analyzed waters. The retention factors (R%) attained very high volues of: 90% for PAHs and almost 100% for phthalates. Probably the absorption phenomenon in these processes responsible for such a high degree of removal of the pollutants on the surface of membranes.
