N2 - The HC slabs of new generation, with total depth from 200 to 500 mm have relatively thin webs and this may cause troubles with shear resistance. The problem of shear resistance is particularly important for cases with live load concentrated at supports. Therefore, the European Standard EN 1168:2005 'Precast concrete products-Hollow core slabs' has introduced the detailed method for testing shear resistance of slabs. According to this Standard test results should be compared with the calculated values of shear capacity, taking into account the prestressing influence. To verify this procedure, following the doubts of designers, full scale shear tests for nine pre-tensioned hollow core slabs were undertaken. All slabs were of the same width 1.20 m, while the depth was 200 mm, 265 mm and 320 mm. The tests were performed strictly with accordance to the rules given in the Standard. The test results were significantly lower than those required from prescribed calculations. Additionally, the irrelevance of the shear tests for HC slabs with low level of prestressing force was recorded. For such elements flexural failure was observed instead of shear, and therefore drawing further conclusions on their shear resistance was not possible.
