Scattering: Inelastic scattering technique—Brillouin

Abstract

Interaction of laser light with natural acoustic phonons in materials can be used for non-destructive measurement of elastic parameters of materials. The Brillouin scattering technique is used for both basic research and applied efforts for all kinds of physical states: gases, liquids and solids. The article defines the scattering phenomenon itself, discusses the basic metrological elements and reviews the results of experimental work, mainly from the perspective of material research.
