Abstract
Recently due to climate changes more and more restrictive environmental policies are being established. One of observable aftermath of this trend is rapidly growing interests in exploitation of the renewable energy sources. Paper presents the structure and performance of the vertical axis wind turbine model. The numerical model of the VAWT is based on the computational fluid dynamics approach. The main objective of the presented model was to simulate the performance of the vertical axis wind turbine in manner significantly more realistic than commonly met. In contrast to the typically utilised approach, the rotational speed of the turbine rotor was also dynamically calculated by in-house UDF - User Define Function implementation. Developed model allowed to compute wind turbine operation characteristics in function of the turbine load.
