Abstract
Two model alkyd paints contg. 2 different corrosion inhibitors were compared: Zn3 (PO4)2 at a concn. of 10% by mass or poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) at a concn. of 2% by mass. The paints were applied to a steel substrate and tested for adhesion to the substrate and the resistance of the resulting coatings to moisture over time. The effectiveness of the coatings was assessed visually in terms of the degree of coating damage, blistering, and rusting. Both inhibitors limited the development of corrosion sufficiently to eliminate any traces of corrosion products on the coating surface. However, after exposing the substrate, it was found that the paint with the polyelectrolyte additionally limited water penetration into the substrate, resulting in less surface damage than the coating containing Zn3 (PO4)2.
