Abstract

The issue of the assessment of risk associated with conventional power stations has received more attention in recent years. This results from the fact that the operational life of many power units has already exceeded the design life. Serious accidents occurring in the energy sector have contributed to the problem. The factor determining the level of reliability is, among others, the technical state of power units components: boilers and turbines. On the basis of real data a quantitative assessment of the technical risk associated with operation of steam turbines is made. The sources of risk are presented with possible scenarios of failures. Calculations of the probability of failure are made for random loads and random properties of materials. Possibilities of risk reduction by the optimization of turbine start-up are discussed. A mathematical model of such optimization is presented. Examples of optimization of real turbine start-ups are shown.
