Abstract
Laser remelting of titanium alloys by overlapping laser tracks using Nd: YAG or diode laser in nitrogen environment led to the formation of the TiN dominant phase. Residual stress measurements in the TiN phase fabricated in surface layers at these conditions revealed the tensile stresses in the range of +500 to +800MPa for overlapping laser tracks produced by Nd:YAG laser and compression ones -300 to -550MPa in the case of the diode laser remelting in one track. Coatings of titanium-nickel produced by remelting of the formerly electro-deposited nickel layer in nitrogen environment were also examined in respect to the formed phases at rapid solidification. Mechanism of TiN formation in surface layers by laser remelting was under discussion.
