Methodology of environmental and economic optimisation of waste to energy systems

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Conference contribution › peer-review

Abstract

Waste management system in new member states of EU is under reconstruction. Due to EU directives quantity of waste landfilled should be reduced significantly in closest future. We can observe increase of quantity of waste being incinerated. Along with system reconstruction its environmental impact will change. Hierarchy Model of Waste Management Systems (WMS) and in particular Municipal Solid Waste Management System (MSWMS) will be replaced by, more flexible, Integrated Model. In order to reach high value of environmental performance indicator and make the MSW system economically viable we should introduce economic and environmental optimisation focused on cost minimization and the lowest possible environmental impact. Environmental Impact Evaluation should include following impact categories: depletion of abiotic resources, global warming, human toxicity, photo-oxidant formation, acidification, eutrophication. Some details of methodology of optimisation of environmental impact and economic performance are discusses in the paper.
