Abstract
The kinetics of noncatalyzed liquid-phase oxidation of 1-methoxy-2- (-3-, and -4)-(1-isopropyl)benzenes (1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-MiPB) with oxygen was studied by measuring the uptake of O2 over 50-120°C. At 50°C (120°C), the oxidizabilities of 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-MiPB evaluated as (k p/kt1/2) from the kinetic model (a free-radical and chain mechanism), rox = ri1/2 (kp/kt1/2)CRH (rox, ri - rates of oxidation and initiation, kp, kt - propagation and termination rate constants, CRH - concentration of MiPB), were 0 (0.2), 1 (5.9) and 3.7 (16.3) mL/(mol·s)1/2, resp. Over 50-74°C and 74-120°C, 1,4-MiPB was resp. more and less oxidizable than cumene. For 1,3- and 1,4-MiPB, the total activation energies were 26±2 and 22±2 kJ/mol, resp., compared with the 28±1 for cumene.
