Abstract
A review with 35 refs. (including Authors' 6 works) covering separation of 2- from 1-isopropylnaphthalene, the latter suppressing oxidation rate, yield and selectivity toward 2-(1-hydroperoxy-1-methylethyl)naphthalene, Authors' kinetic data on oxidation of 1- and 2-isopropylnaphthalene and cumene (the 1- is less prone to oxidation than the 2- by a factor of 10-12; the 2- and cumene are comparable), distillative preparation of 99% pure 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene, oxidation to 2,6-dicarboxynaphthalenic acid, which involves formation of first mono- and then dihydroperoxide and mono-alcohols, and preparation of 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene. 2-Iso- and 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalenes can be used to make 2-naphthol, 2-acetylnaphthalene, 2-isopropenylnaphthalene, 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene and other fine chemicals.
