Influence of carbon nanotube dosage on the mechanical strength of cement mortars

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes are a widely researched functional filler in cement-based materials. One of the main properties influenced by the addition of carbon nanotubes is the cement material's mechanical strength, both flexural and compressive. The paper aims to find a relation between the dosage of carbon nano-tubes regarding the cement content and the mechanical strength of the composite material. The results indicate that this relation is not linear, with low amounts of carbon nanotubes having beneficial effects but dosages over certain thresholds showing a decrease in mechanical strength. This phenomenon might be caused by difficulties in the proper dispersion of larger amounts of carbon nanotubes in the cement matrix.
