Heat treatment of the WE54 magnesium alloy

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Precipitation hardened WE54 alloy offers attractive properties for aerospace and automotive industries. It reaches high specific strength, creep resistance and corrosion resistance up to a temperature of 250 °C. The alloy containing 5 %wt.Y, 1.7 %wt.Nd 3.1 %wt.HRE (Yb, Er, Dy, Gd) and 0.55 %wt Zr. Microstructure of WE54 magnesium alloy were characterized in as-cast and after heat treatment. Solution heat treatment was performed at 525 °C/8 h in air, quenched in water, and aged at 250 °C for up to 96 h.The ascast microstructure and microstructural evolution during hest treatment were examined by LM, SEM and TEM microscopes. A OLYMPUS GX71 light microscope was utilised for LM observations, while a HITACHI S-3400N scanning electron microscope with Thermo Noran spectrometer used to the SEM investigations. TEM analysis was carried out on a JEOL JEM 3010 microscope. The microstructure of the cast alloy consists of a-Mg phase matrix with precipitates of MgY and Mg24Y5 intermetallic phases. After solution treatment followed by water cooling, the intermetallics phases dissolves in the matrix. The ageing treatment caused precipitation of a β″ (D019), β′(bcc), β1(fcc) and β(fcc - Mg14Y2Nd) intermetallic phases.
