Evaluation of an α type Stirling engine regenerator based on a simplified and differential model

Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of a Stirling engine regenerator. Due to the high dependence of Stirling engine performance and efficiency on the efficiency of the regenerator, it is imperative, when modeling the engine, to create a regenerator model that is both exact and which allows for a high computational speed. In this work, the analysis of Hausen developed for regenerators in industrial furnaces is used, that is the Λ − Π model, and expanded on. It is shown, that due to the conditions found in the analyzed engine, the model can be further simplified while still maintaining accuracy. This regenerator calculation scheme is implemented in a zero-dimensional differential model of an α type engine, and results of the simulation are shown. A separate one-dimensional regenerator model based on differential heat and mass balance equations is also shown. This model works based on the division of the regenerator into separate control volumes and evaluating the flows of mass and energy between them. This is especially useful in further research work on Stirling engines due to the unbalanced character of the working conditions in Stirling engine regenerators.
