Abstract

During recent years, trials on the epidemiological features of type 1 diabetes (previous name: insulin-dependent) are performed all over the world more frequently and the periods of observations are longer. Also, the methods used for building the registers are becoming more and more similar and are based on general accepted criteria (i.e. EURODIAB). Well-documented, long-term, multiparametral based data are gathered, which involve all newly diagnosed cases, regions and countries. Their aims are to estimate the dynamics in changes of the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus and describe the resulting social-economic problems, as well as to search for an explanation of ethiology, and possibilities of prevention in different stages of the disease.
