Engine Power and Flexibility for SI Engines Fueled by Alternative Fuels

Abstract

The study aims to approximate changes in the dynamics of vehicle motion that take place in connection with the use of various fuels feeding the engine. The article presents the influence of gaseous fuels such as: LPG, CNG and mixtures of CNG and hydrogen (HyTHAN) as well as LPG and BioDME on vehicle flexibility. Previous studies have not paid much attention to the problem of changing vehicle performance when using different fuels to power the engine. This is a new approach that allows to determine the advantages and disadvantages of using alternative fuels. The aim of the analysis is to present the transfer of subjective feelings related to the dynamics of vehicle motion to the empirical plane. In the work, tests were carried out for a four-cylinder SI engine with a displacement of 1.6 dm3, installed in an OPEL vehicle. The mixture of LPG, CNG, mixtures of LPG and BioDME and CNG with hydrogen were evaluated, and the results were compared to the parameters obtained for the engine powered by the base fuel (gasoline).
