Abstract
The paper presents possibilities to decrease the energy demand for operation of buildings with large internal heat gains, especially office buildings. A short review of changes in the design principles for such buildings is presented. The changes lead to the radical decrease of energy demand by introducing the low-energy and passive building standards. The activities towards innovative solutions and practical design guidelines for the heating, cooling and ventilating systems in the energy-saving buildings undertaken in the last decade in the frame of the international research programmes are discussed. The results of authors' own numerical simulations for some innovative variants of cooling of a typical (in Polish conditions) office room are presented. The possibilities of a substantial energy conservation is demonstrated for the maximum, momentary as well as seasonal demand for cooling.
