Abstract
This study aims to add more experimental results by incorporating bio-fibers into building materials in order to ensure the performance of recycled materials like bio-fibers in the construction sector. An experimental study focusing on the physical and mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced mortar. A reference mortar (cement mortar and cement lime mortar) mixture were used, and two different types of natural reinforcement microfibers (sisal and jute) were used, with different dosages ranging from 1% to 2%. The effect of each type of fiber and dosage on the properties of the mixture, such as compressive, flexural, dry shrinkage, and the microstructural characteristics of the mortars are investigated at 28days. Analyzing the physical-mechanical properties, it is discovered that the mortar sample containing 2 wt. percent modified jute fiber (in relation to the weight of cement) has 50% and 20% higher compressive and flexural strength, respectively than the reference sample. In the case of sisal fibers, the strength is better with 1% doses further increasing in amount reduces the compressive and flexural strength. When compared to sisal and reference samples, the performance of mortar improves by reducing shrinkage and sensitivity to cracking due to the addition of jute fibers. SEM and MIP were used to investigate the microstructure of the mortar samples after 28days. The results show that incorporating jute fibers has no effect on the microstructure of mortar when compared to the reference, and it also improves the bond between the cement matrix and the fiber, resulting in better mechanical properties. The sisal fibers have poor adhesion properties and pull away from the cement matrix's surface. Nonetheless, natural fibers behave differently in strong cement mortars than in "soft "lime-based materials. Advantages can be gained in both cases, but certain factors, such as adhesion to the mortar matrix and water content of the mixture, must be considered.
