Abstract
A procedure is proposed which may provide the basis of a standardised method for the determination of permeability of organic vapours through polymers similar to the current standards applied to water vapour. The gravimetric method was found to be very simple and was suitaWle for routine quality control in the production of films. The method involves the use of a cell which has one face closed by a membrane of the polymer through which diffusion occurs. Particular attention is paid to the sealing between the membrane and all, Wood's alloy first being used as a sealant but proving inadequate and being replaced by PTFE sealing rings.
