Abstract
The paper gives an overview of three modern designs of detectors used in fire alarm systems dedicated to operation in difficult environmental conditions. The principle of operation of standard optical smoke sensors installed in fire alarm systems has been discussed. The shortcomings of popular detectors have been presented. Examples of situations where general purpose sensors are not able to provide proper monitoring have been demonstrated. The design and operation principle of state-of-the-art suction detector sensor, flame sensors and DTS (Distributed Temperature Sensing using optical fibers) sensors have been described in the paper. The authors have also commented on the use of such devices in different branches of industry, where these elements are not used in early fire detection installations, but they operate independently, being responsible for the monitoring of manufacturing processes.
