Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the main removal mechanisms of metals in constructed wetlands: adsorption, filtration and sedimentation, association with metal oxides and hydroxides, precipitation of sulfides, microbial processes, and plant uptake. The principal focus has been directed towards the role of bacterial sulfide precipitation and the effect and mechanism of plant uptake. The second part of the chapter describes a wide selection of state-of-the-art and advanced analytical methods used for metal speciation in wetland matrices.
