Comparison of optimization methods based on primitive bodies of machine tools and preliminary design

Abstract

This paper presents a comparison of optimization methods which facilitate the process of identifying the best structural form for a machine tool body. The first method enables optimal selection of the geometric parameters of bodies based on the preliminary design. The other method allows optimal placement of the material in the course of the topology optimization process. It results in the development of an approximate geometric model and once it is particularized it is possible to conduct optimization of its geometric parameters. Application of the method enables a solution close to a global optimum to be obtained.
