Abstract
Most of Quaternary sediments are of glacial origin and their correlation and dating is sometimes impossible without application of appropriate methods of isotopic age determination. Discussion of the radiocarbon method is presented with special reference to the results of the studies of the Radiocarbon Laboratory of Institute of Physics, Silesian Technical University in Gliwice. The most important subjects studied by team of the Gliwice Radiocarbon Laboratory include: methodology of radiocarbon dating of fossil soil and detailed dating of numerous sites with fossil soils levels, methodology of radiocarbon dating of calcareous tufa and deriving paleoclimatic information from stable isotopes studies of selected tufa profiles occuring in southern Poland, radiocarbon and stable isotope studies of lake sediments, with special reference to varved sediment of the Gościa̧ż Lake, calibration of the radiocarbon time scale at the boundary Younger Dryas and Holocene. More then 4000 samples have been dated within the framework of routine dating services supplied by the Radiocarbon Laboratory to all interested research institutions in Poland involved in studies of the Quaternary.
