Abstract
One of the challenges and most important issues in the energy sector is to increase energy efficiency through the development of energy storage methods. Currently, there is a high potential for Power-to-Gas installations, which assume the use of surplus electricity from the grid or renewable energy sources to produce fuels, such as hydrogen. In this case, the produced gas can be treated as an easy-to-store and transport energy carrier. This paper presents the idea of installation of renewable energy storage in the form of hydrogen. Solar/wind energy can be converted directly to hydrogen by pairing a photovoltaic/wind device with water-splitting technology, such as an electrolyzer. This electrolysis pathway uses renewable resources to supply electricity, resulting in an emission-free fuel. The concept of experimental investigations of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolyzer used for hydrogen production for the purpose of storing stochastic electricity from renewables is summarized. The experiment is based on a PEM water electrolyzer operating at a pressure range up to 16 bar and having a maximum production capacity of 480cc/min hydrogen per hour. The obtained results allow to determine the characteristics of the device.
