Abstract
With the dynamic development of the internet, we are observing the development of modern technologies to facilitate the quality of public life in urban spaces. Therefore, in the context of urban development and urban space management, the concept of "smart city"has emerged, aspiring to be one of the most important research areas and topics of the 21st century. GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technologies play a key role in the development of smart cities, particularly in the area of environmental protection. GIS enables monitoring air quality, water quality, and noise, as well as managing green spaces, which facilitates the sustainable development of urban spaces. The main aim of the article is characteristic of the concept of smart cities and its essence in terms of sustainable development, technologies, and the challenges associated with their implementation. The paper presents practical examples of implementing modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and communication technologies to improve the quality of life of residents in Polish and Greek cities and to manage resources sustainably. It presents the implementation of objects such as the Internet of Things (IoT) in the form of air measurement stations in Poland, using GIS software to develop useful overview maps, which constitute a useful tool for monitoring and managing air quality in the country. It demonstrates the numerous advantages of smart city solutions, as well as their future prospects and directions of development.
