Abstract

In this paper the results of the thermodynamic analysis of a coal-fired cogeneration unit integrated with a membrane carbon dioxide separation installation are presented. Analysis were carried out for two variants of structure of the membrane installation: one-stage unit and two-stage unit. Calculations were directed to achieve the target level of carbon dioxide recovery rate and adequate purity of CO2 directed to the storage place. Results of calculations showed that achievement of assumed values of recovery rate and purity is possible only through the use of two-stage systems. The main objective of the analysis was to determine the energy consumption of the compression processes, the aim of which is to achieve an appropriate difference between the partial pressures of gases separated by a membrane. Determination of the power needed for driving of the vacuum pumps working in the membrane installation and CO2 compressors allowed for the calculation of the efficiency loss of the cogeneration unit, resulting from its integration with a separation installation. The results of the analysis are compared with the results of the calculations conducted for a cogeneration unit, which is not integrated with CO2 separation installation.
