Abstract

Meaningful group of machine tools are designed on the base of proven solutions devised many years ago. These solutions are not always optimal. The main criterion of these machine tool bodies design are the required static stiffness. While for HSC machine tools a new approach to the design is necessary. In the case of HSC machine tools, for which speed and accelerations are considerably higher, beside the static stiffness criteria, there are other equally important facts to be considered, such as: dynamical criteria and the minimization of the mass of movable assemblies. This paper shows the new method of machine tools bodies design using Finite Element Method and Genetic Algorithms. The assumptions and results of initial research were presented. These results will be used as the reference values for the optimization of selected machine tools bodies.
