The Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology (SUT) was one of four faculties that established the SUT 78 years ago. It is also one of more than 30 faculties that provide education in the field of civil engineering in Poland. The Faculty is fully authorised to award doctoral and post-doctoral degrees in the disciplines of Civil Engineering, Geodesy and Transport. The Faculty offers first- and second-cycle studies in full-time and part-time modes in Gliwice.

Students can choose from five specialisations:

• Structural engineering
• Construction process engineering
• Road engineering
• Structural engineering (studies in English, full-time only)
• Civil engineering-and-architecture (full-time studies, first degree only)

The Faculty of Civil Engineering has a strong track record of preparing its graduates for the engineering profession, as evidenced by the positive outcomes of the state examinations for building qualifications. Our close collaboration with the Silesian Regional Chamber of Civil Engineers has been instrumental in this success.

The Faculty has a well-equipped teaching facility, including one of the largest civil engineering laboratories in the country, classrooms with multimedia projectors and computer laboratories. Wireless internet is available in the Faculty building as part of the 'Eduroam' network. The Faculty has an active student government and student scientific groups.

Research and teaching staff

The Faculty employs 103 academic teachers, comprising 9 full professors, 16 associated professors, and 78 assistant professors (including 3 architects).

The scientific and research activities of the Faculty

The research conducted at the Silesian University of Technology has been organised into six Priority Research Areas (PRAs), which include:

• Computational Oncology and Personalised Medicine (PRA1)
• Artificial intelligence and data processing (PRA2)
• Materials of the future (PRA3)
• Smart cities and mobility of the future (PRA4)
• Process automation and Industry 4.0 (PRA5)
• Climate and environmental protection, modern energy (PRA6)

The Faculty of Civil Engineering, whose research, teaching and research staff educate civil engineering students, conducts its scientific and research activities primarily in two Priority Research Areas: PRA4 and PRA3. The following topics are covered:

• Reinforced concrete, prestressed, steel and timber structures
• Frame and large-panel structures
• Soil research, foundations
• Mechanics of continuous media and dynamics of mechanical systems in a non-classical approach
• Development of structural theory, in particular of structures exposed to the effects of mining exploitatio,
• New technologies in bridge construction, development of methods and software for the optimal design of bridge structures
• Design, construction and operation of municipal infrastructure
• Transport construction under conditions of mining deformation of the ground
• Technology, testing of building materials and products, applied rheology, testing of durability of building materials and structures,design of ecological buildings
• Organisational, information and decision-making systems and management systems for construction companies
• Creation of scientific bases for operation, renovation and repair

The research conducted at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology may also address highly specialised topics, such as:

• Computer simulation of behaviour of structures under load using FEM and MEB
• Modelling of structural materials and soils using advanced material models
• Applied rheology of three-phase media, mainly mortar and concrete mixtures
• Probabilistic methods and stochastic process theory in the analysis of design problems
• Artificial intelligence systems using fuzzy set theory, genetic algorithms and neural networks
• Dynamic, seismic and para-seismic effects on structures
• Durability testing of reinforced concrete and steel structures using electrochemical methods
• Diagnostics and monitoring of corrosion degradation of structures using corrosion sensors

All of the aforementioned scientific and research issues are fully integrated into the curricular content implemented during the education of students at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology.It is worth mentioning that the Minister of Education and Science has awarded the Silesian University of Technology with the highest category, A+, in two disciplines, category A in seven disciplines and category B+ in three disciplines, based on the evaluation carried out for the period 2017-2021. The scientific discipline of Civil Engineering, Geodesy and Transport, to which the Faculty of Civil Engineering is fully (100%) assigned, has been awarded the highest category, A.

International cooperation

The Faculty of Civil Engineering is engaged in the internationalisation of the educational process and in teaching and research collaboration with academic institutions abroad. These activities are conducted in accordance with the rules and guidelines currently in force at the Silesian University of Technology. The majority of activities are coordinated by the Silesian University of Technology's Department of International Cooperation. The department's responsibilities include: establishing and maintaining contacts and cooperation with foreign centres, preparing, concluding and maintaining records of international cooperation agreements, and promoting the university's potential. SUT participates in international initiatives to develop cooperation with foreign countries, organises university-wide conferences, seminars, workshops, training courses and competitions with an international dimension, implements academic exchange programmes and maintains records of incoming and outgoing students.

The Silesian University of Technology has over 200 partnership agreements with foreign universities.

Offer of technical services

The Faculty maintains close contact with the construction industry, largely due to its location in the Upper Silesian region. The Faculty offers a range of technical services, including:

• Preparation of expert reports and technical opinions on all types of building and engineering structures
• Assessment of the impact of mining deformations of the ground on structures, designing of protection of structures against the impact of mining deformations
• Supervision and consultancy in the field of building design
• Design of reconstruction, reinforcement and modernisation of buildings and engineering structures
• Design of transport systems in urban areastraffic engineering and environmental protection
• Transport infrastructure in areas of mining influence
• Testing of building materials and components: strength, durability, other physical properties
• Utilisation of waste materials
• Research, evaluation and design of thermal and acoustic insulation
